The Yawkey Center was constructed above the Northeast Proton Therapy Center. The Northeast Proton Therapy Center. At the NPTC protons (charged particles) are accelerated with a large magnetic field in a machine called a cyclotron. Large magnets help guide the proton beam to three treatment rooms. Two of the treatment rooms 3 story high gantries which can be rotated to aim the proton beam from various directions. Patients lie on robotic beds that can be adjusted for precise alignment of targets contained throughout the body.
The Yawkey Center is a state-of-the-art ambulatory care facility, greatly increasing MGH's capacity to handle outpatient care and services. Together with MGH facilities staff, Leggat McCall Properties had overall project management responsibilities for this 10-story structure constructed above an operational facility with 'top-down' and 'bottom-up' construction. The building's tight site and ongoing surrounding operations made the construction challenges significant. The building also incorporates a 700-space below-grade parking facility.
