GBREB Hopeful Internship Program Will Encourage Diversity in Boston RE Industry

Three academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students recently completed the first summer internship program developed by the Greater Boston Real Estate Board (GBREB) and their Foundation Scholarship partner uAspire. The pilot program offered paid internships at commercial real estate firms with the aim of addressing an issue that is increasingly at the forefront of the minds of local industry leaders - the lack of diversity in the Greater Boston real estate community. The program was established with the intent of making the students aware of the wide array of career opportunities that exist in the real estate business.

Mei Huang interned at Leggat McCall and completed a number of complex projects, including one where she used Google Earth to identify transit-oriented development (TOD) sites within a five minute walk of Metro Boston MBTA stations for the firm. Leggat McCall Project Manager Megan Pasquina, who mentored Mei during her internship, said, "She'™s just a great kid, really smart and really motivated, so once we found a groove, it was great. Being able to watch her develop and get more comfortable as she gave her presentations to me and Mahmood (Malihi) was pretty amazing. And it was an awesome opportunity for a high school kid."
